GRAMOPHONE

History
Passacaglia has, over the past eleven years, established itself as one of Britain's best and most entertaining chamber music ensembles. They first won national recognition in 1995, as runner-up at the International Early Music Network Young Artists' Competition. Over the next year they broadcast live on BBC Radio 3's Brian Kay's Sunday Morning, recorded a disc for WDR Köln Radio, and were chosen for the BBC's prestigious Young Artists' Forum. Passacaglia also received generous sponsorship from the Countess of Munster Musical Trust, the John Tunnell Trust, and the Arts Council of Great Britain. In 1999 they were nominated for an Early Music Network tour.

Concerts
As well as acclaimed performances at the Wigmore Hall and Purcell Room, Passacaglia has played at most of the UK's biggest festivals, including the Three Choirs Festival, Spitalfields Festival, Norfolk and Norwich Festival, Beverley and East Riding Early Music Festival, York Early Music Festival, and the Kings Lynn Festival. Passacaglia has also performed for many music societies and clubs in England and Scotland. Outside of the UK Passacaglia has appeared at the Sligo Baroque Music Festival (Ireland), Nordmaling Early Music Festival (Sweden) and in the Czech Republic. They also toured in the American mid-west in Spring 2004.

New Directions
Passacaglia is committed to developing an imaginative and innovative approach to programme planning. In recent years the ensemble has undertaken very successful collaborative tours with soprano Helen Groves, and Swedish recorder virtuoso Dan Laurin. More recently the group's New Music Project for composers has been met with unprecendented enthusiasm and approval, enabling the ensemble to introduce some stimulating modern works into its repertoire, and to promote the use of period instruments in twenty-first century music.
